Loving NC weather this week!

It’s been in the 60s and 70s this week and I’m loving it. Just happy to be outside. This weekend’s outdoor shoots are going to be awesome with great weather.

Falling (and why I need a GoPro camera)

Note to self: filming while snowboarding is dangerous. I have the muscle bruises to prove it.

A couple of things could have made the video better including going more than twice a season to get better, but a GoPro camera would be nice. This video was made with a Panasonic DMC TS2. It survived the falls more than I did.

Snowboarding in Style

I went snowboarding this past weekend at Sugar Mountain, NC and had a blast. It’s still taking me a bit to recover from all the aches and pains from falling, but I’m still in one piece.

There were a lot of funky and crazy outfits out on the slopes, but this was one of the more fashionable outfits out there.

Any original artists out there?

I admit it: I am a not an original artist.

Every photo I’ve created has been influenced by other photographers or even painters. I like one part of what an artist has done and have combined styles from other artists to create a photo. Some lighting tips from here, posing suggestions from there, and oh! prop design ideas from here - all mixed together to create the photos I produce today.

But it’s ok. Because that’s how we all do it. We’ve all been doing this for quite some time now.

Kirby Ferguson does a better job explaining this using the movie industry in his video series Everything is a Remix.

Forget Regret, or Their Portraits Are Yours to Miss

Living on the other side of the country makes it difficult and expensive to go back frequently. I’ve made a lot of great friends in the last two years that I’ve been in North Carolina, but nothing beats spending time with family.

I was backing up my hard drive prior to my trip to California last Christmas when I came across some old family photos that I took with my first DSLR. I remember being so happy that I shot just about everything: plants, the backyard, and my friends. I noticed that I didn’t make a lot of shots of family in my college years. A load of remorse just dropped on top of me after realizing this fact.

I then came across Zack Arias’ blog post about having regrets of not being able to make a portrait of his grandfather before he passed away.

I haven’t lost a lot of close people in my life. My grandfather was the closest person I have ever lost and I regret so much that I never made a portrait of him. I just have these grainy disc camera photos of him to remember him by. Nothing that really says who he was or what he was about.

I thank God my parents are still heathy and my sister is doing well. But home is so far away and I don’t get a chance to see them very often. I decided that I am going to make sure I get shots of my family during this Christmas/New Years trip to California. I told my parents and sister about my plan and they were more than excited. And I can say that my family and I had a fun bonding experience. It’s not everyday I get to tell my parents what to do.

I leave you with a strong convicting challenge from Zack that has challenged me:

Are you photographing those you love? I’m not. Not like I should be. I have a big long list of people to get started on. You always think you have time. Sometimes you do. Most of the time you don’t… Sad isn’t it? Me. A photographer who can’t turn a camera on to his own family. There’s your challenge for the week. Family portrait time this week.

Kodachrome NC Workshop - Chapel Hill

Watching this group dance made me feel so uncoordinated that I felt that I couldn’t walk (*whispers* I can’t dance to save my life).

I did a blog post about how great it is when photographers share their info. Kodachrome is a group of dancers that meet up for the purpose of sharing their choreography. In the past 2 years Kodachrome has hosted workshops in various dance studios and universities along the East Coast. They have made their way to the Carolinas and recently hosted a free workshop at UNC Chapel Hill.

Here are some snapshots from the day’s workshop.

Got to do a mini-shoot with the instructors of the day. They were sticky and sweaty, but their energy levels were still sky high!

Final shoutout to Kodachrome as they celebrate their 2 year birthday this weekend. Happy birthday!

Moving: revealing the pack rat in you

I’m in the process of moving into a new place. My lease is up this month and the owner is bumping up the monthly rate. That’s my queue to leave.

I can’t believe how much junk I’ve collected over the years! I found a couple things that I’ve been looking for in the last couple of months and found some things that I don’t even use. Moving out has made me realize how much useless stuff I have. Time to sell/donate! How do you deal with the excess junk/things you don’t need at your place?

I won’t have a stable net connection until next week. I apologize in advance if the reply emails are a day or two late.

Here’s a teaser from a shoot I did over the weekend at UNC Chapel Hill of Kodachrome’s NC Workshop.

Concert - Stellar Kart + Sharing Info

The cool thing about having photographers as friends is the opportunity to shoot an awesome band like Stellar Kart. Lesson: share and network.

I believe sharing information is a great thing. However some people believe withholding information keep themselves more competitive or ahead of the game. I’m thankful to all the photographers on the web who have posted their thoughts, experiences, business tips, and photos of their gear, trips, and lighting setups for all to share with the photography community. Sites like Creative Live and FStoppers are just a few of the great resources that have helped me out as a growing photographer. I’m also grateful to my friends who are photographers whom I can locally or on the web talk about photography.

I got to tag along with my friend Eryn who was the lead photographer during Stellar Kart’s concert in Long Beach, CA last December at the Tsunami: Love Does 2010 Conference. I had a blast shooting with you Eryn!

Here are my favs from this rock’n concert.

Sometimes color can distract us from the emotion in the photo. I’m happy with how these B&W photos came out.
